DAY 16: The Adventures of a Vegan Carnivore

Original Post Date: Wed, Mar 9, 2011

Today marked my 2nd trip to Whole Foods in my whole life. It was MUCH faster and less expensive – both wins in my book! You know you’ve hit a groove when you are shopping for your “favorites”. Of course, I couldn’t resist a few new (and hopefully) tasty treats! I found myself in the middle of what-can-only-be-described as the gluten-free aisle looking at brownie mixes. One just happened to find it’s way into my cart. It was calling out to be rescued from the shelves and who am I to refuse aid? Alas, I know that I can’t make them for another 12 days, so into the back of the cupboard it goes.

I had mentioned Larabars in an earlier post and Whole Foods has an aisle of flavor possibilities to try out! Target only has 2 (booooo). New flavors for this week: Cinnamon Roll, Lemon Bar and Key Lime. Oooooo …. Can’t wait to dig in. Now for some Larabar education: All Larabars are gluten-free, but Vegans beware, not all Larabar flavors are animal-free. For some reason tonight, I would see gluten-free and automatically assume VEGAN! So NOT the case. Gluten-free does not a vegan make. And thus another round of label reading!

As promised, meditation activities commenced this evening. I tried to take it very seriously! In fact, there was no giggling (sorry to disappoint!). Tonight’s exercise was to focus on each muscle group in order to relax all your muscles down to your toes. Easy enough, right? I must be too high strung for my own good. It probably didn’t help that I had my window open and could hear traffic and planes and in the faint distance BART trains. That and I’m a huge mind-wanderer. So I kept thinking about the noises outside, thinking about what to make for lunch, thinking about the clothes I need to put away, the things I need to do at work, and on and on. I’m hoping practice makes perfect. I’ve got another 12 days to figure it out.

Closing thought … hmmm, which Larabar flavor should I try in the morning? I think I’ll go with Cinnamon Roll.
